A collection of poems and hybrid works that hover at the boundary between poetry and prose, and that range from the abstract and experimental to the concrete and accessible. Employing imagery that is vivid and frequently surprising, the author addresses subjects that include the natural world (especially the plant kingdom), art and music, the dreamlike regions of memory, and the mysterious—the “dissolving forms” that tell us the world is stranger than we might suppose. In the title poem and others, she summons recollections of her early life in 1940's southwestern Virginia, “the heart of Appalachia.”

This imaginative and unique collection of poems can be read from cover to cover or by opening the book at random. Poems such as "Songs" can transport one back to the far away and long ago and a world that gradually disappeared as the modern era approached. Shorter poems, such as "Dog Days" can evoke emotionally moving images with a brevity of words reminiscent of the Japanese Haiku. Many of the poems evoke scenes and feelings that are soothing, relaxing, calming and peaceful. Ms Shannon obviously understands Hamlet's admonition to Horatio ("There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."), and many of her poems reach well beyond the five senses. This is a book that a reader will return to often, discovering something new each time. I am glad to give it a five star rating.Product details

Summoning Jeanne Shannon 9781940769486 Books Reviews
Insightful. Meditative. Calming to the mind as it caresses the soul. Obviously written by one who has survived the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" and has also taken the time to smell the roses. I recommend it highly.
Jeanne Shannon's collection of poems leaves the reader stunned by her ability to evoke universal emotions of longing, beauty, pain, awe, and pure joy. Her imagery and attention to detail blended with her obvious love of the natural world takes us on a visual journey where, less is more, and where words become a vehicle through which she allows us access into her very soul. A peek into our past, but certainly, Jeanne's worldview has a visionary aspect that is timeless.
This is a beautiful book by one of New Mexico's finest poets. From the modernity of her "Prime Numbers" piece to poems about people and places of the past, Jeanne Shannon is a mystical explorer of the dreamtime, of the wavelength that connects all beings, even those remaining only in memory or as energetic presences moving across boundaries of time and space.
Reading these poems, we are reminded of the fragility and beauty of life contained in a flower; the unfolding of a season through its smallest signs, and much more. These are poems of insight that speak through lost perfumes, long ago afternoons, people and experiences that are so often swept away by time. Jeanne Shannon tells us that in remembering we find a connection not only to our past but also to the essence of life itself. The power of her language and work is well represented in the pages of "Summoning" and I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys vitally rich and engaging poetry.
